Senior Software Engineer,Backend - Core/API & Process Automation

Camunda is building an enterprise platform for agentic orchestration, and this role focuses on the core event-sourced workflow engine. The Senior Software Engineer will design and evolve the C8 REST/gRPC/MCP API, tackle hard distributed systems problems, and ensure high performance and reliability.

• Design, build, and evolve the event-sourced engine and its C8 REST/gRPC/MCP API (command/event, CQRS), including safe public-API evolution
• Take on hard, ambiguous problems and lead them end-to-end – define the problem, write solution design (ADR), weigh trade-offs, sequence work, and drive delivery
• Ship high-impact engine features fast – such as suspending and resuming individual process instances, and enabling AI agents to steer running processes
• Ship resiliency, schema evolution, and observability – smooth version upgrades, replay safety, migration correctness, and features diagnosable in production
• Detect and optimize inefficient processing and data-access patterns across data stores (RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, relational/Postgres)
• Level up the team and lead incidents – high-quality reviews, mentoring, on-call, drive resolution, own RCA, and feed systemic fixes back into the platform

• 5+ years professional backend engineering with deep experience in distributed and event-driven systems
• Deep event sourcing / distributed execution knowledge (consistency, ordering, replay, failure modes)
• Strong API design and evolution (contract-first, backward-compatible change, versioning/deprecation, contract testing)
• Ability to diagnose and fix performance under production load (profiling, benchmarking, tail-latency, backpressure)
• Technical leadership from ambiguity (autonomous, break down undefined problems, drive pragmatic decisions, level up other engineers)
• Excellent communication and product sense (crisp technical writing, remote-first collaboration, deep product thinking)
• Nice-to-have: Experience with workflow automation / process orchestration (BPMN or similar)
• Nice-to-have: Awareness of consensus/replication protocols (Raft, SWIM, etc.)
• Nice-to-have: Deep query-pattern optimization in RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational/Postgres
• Nice-to-have: Solid JVM knowledge (memory model, concurrency/perf)
