What is git fetch used for?

git fetch is used to download new data from a remote repository into the local one, without changing the current working branch or files.

When you run git fetch:

• new commits, branches, and tags are downloaded from the remote repository
• remote-tracking branches (origin/main, origin/dev) are updated
• no merge is performed and the working directory is not changed

git fetch lets you safely find out about new changes on the server and analyze them before applying them to your local branch.
