Why is it important to use <h1>-<h6> headings in order?

Headings <h1>-<h6> form the hierarchy of a document's structure, and their correct order is needed not for looks, but so that browsers, search engines, and assistive technologies understand the logic of the page.

1. They form the meaningful structure of the page

Headings are the "skeleton" of the content. The browser and search engines use them to build the document's outline.

Example (correct):

html
<h1>News</h1> <h2>Technology</h2> <h3>Artificial intelligence</h3> <h2>Science</h2>

Here you can see:

  • <h1> is the main heading,
  • <h2> is a section,
  • <h3> is a subsection.

If the order is mixed up (<h1><h4><h2>), the logic breaks: search engines and reading software cannot tell what belongs to what.

2. They affect SEO

Search engines analyze headings to determine the topic and priority of content:

  • <h1> is the main meaning of the entire page (usually one).
  • <h2>-<h3> are the key subtopics.

If the headings go in order, the search engine indexes the content better and understands what matters and what is secondary.

3. They improve accessibility

Screen readers and software for users with low vision read a site by its heading structure. If the order is broken, the user will find it impossible to navigate: instead of logical navigation, they will hear chaos like "Level 5 heading... then 2... then 4...".

4. They make comprehension and maintenance easier

For a developer and a reader, sequential headings are a logical map of the document. They make it easy to understand where a new topic starts and where the previous one ends.

Summary:

LevelPurpose
<h1>The main heading of the page (one)
<h2>Main sections
<h3>Subsections within sections
<h4>-<h6>Detail, sub-points

Conclusion: Using headings in order means building a logical and clear structure. It helps search engines, users, and developers alike: the page becomes accessible, SEO-friendly, and easy to read.
