What are the responsibilities of a Product Owner?

A Product Owner is the person responsible for the value of the product being built and who determines exactly what the team should do to achieve the business goals. They are the link between the client, the users, and the development team. If the Scrum Master is responsible for the process and the developers for implementation, the Product Owner is responsible for direction and priorities.

1. Managing the Product Backlog

• forms and maintains the product backlog - a list of all ideas, tasks, features, and improvements;
• sets priorities: what matters now and what can wait;
• refines and describes tasks so the team understands what to build and why;
• removes outdated or irrelevant items.

2. Shaping the Product Vision

• explains to the team and stakeholders why the product exists and what problem it solves;
• defines the development strategy and long-term goals;
• ensures shared understanding between the business and development.

3. Defining Sprint Goals

• formulates the goal of each sprint together with the team;
• selects which items from the Product Backlog go into the current Sprint Backlog;
• makes sure each iteration contributes to the overall product strategy.

4. Communicating with stakeholders

• gathers requirements and feedback from clients, users, and management;
• represents the client's interests to the team;
• regularly demonstrates the results of the work at Sprint Review and decides what changes to make to the backlog.

5. Evaluating the result and accepting the increment

• checks whether the completed work meets the Definition of Done and the business requirements;
• accepts or rejects tasks after the sprint is finished;
• analyzes the impact of new features on users and the business.

#What a Product Owner does not do

• Does not manage the team directly - the team is self-organized.
• Does not dictate how exactly to implement tasks - that is the developers' area of responsibility.
• Does not change priorities during the sprint - changes are only possible between iterations.
