What roles exist in Scrum?

In Scrum there are three main roles that form the Scrum team. These roles are not "positions" but areas of responsibility that balance business, process, and technical implementation. Together they create a closed loop: from setting a goal to a finished, tested result at the end of each sprint.

#1. Product Owner

The main representative of the business on the team. They are responsible for what exactly needs to be done and why - they shape the product vision and manage priorities.

Main tasks:

• gathers and analyzes requirements from clients and users;
• builds the Product Backlog - a list of all the product's features, tasks, and improvements;
• sets priorities - what goes into the next sprint, and what comes later;
• makes sure the team creates maximum value in minimum time;
• accepts the work results (increment) after each sprint.

Key goal: make sure the product solves the user's real problems and delivers business results.

#2. Scrum Master

Responsible for making sure the team works according to Scrum principles and doesn't lose focus. This is not a manager or a boss, but a facilitator and protector of the process.

Main tasks:

• makes sure the team follows Scrum processes and values;
• removes obstacles (blockers) that get in the way of work;
• helps set up interaction between team members;
• teaches the team the principles of self-organization;
• protects the team from outside pressure and distracting tasks.

Key goal: ensure a healthy, productive, and predictable work rhythm.

#3. Development Team

This is a cross-functional group of specialists that builds the product. It includes developers, testers, designers, analysts - everyone who actually turns tasks into finished functionality.

Team characteristics:

• self-organizes - decides on its own how to complete the assigned tasks;
• is responsible for the product's quality and readiness;
• works iteratively - each iteration (sprint) delivers a working result;
• interacts directly, without intermediaries.

Key goal: consistently deliver a quality increment - a part of the product ready for use.
