What tasks does the application layer solve?

The application layer solves tasks related to how applications work over the network. In simpler terms, it makes sure programs can send and receive data over the network in a convenient, understandable way.

The application layer is the entry point into the network for programs:

• browsers
• email clients
• messengers
• API clients

An application does not work directly with packets and IP addresses, it talks to the application layer.

The application layer provides ready-made network services, for example:

• loading web pages
• sending and receiving mail
• transferring files
• making requests to server APIs

In other words, it answers the question: "What exact network service does the application need?"

At this layer it is defined:

• in what format
• how to interpret the data
