**A host address** is the **IP address of a specific device within a network**, used to **identify that device and deliver packets to it**.

## What a host address means

An IP address logically consists of two parts:

- the **network part**: indicates which network the address belongs to
- the **host part**: indicates a specific device on that network

**A host address** is an address in which:

- the network part identifies the network
- **the host part is not zero and does not consist of all ones**

## Example (IPv4)

Network:

```

On this network:

- **network address**: `192.168.1.0`
- **broadcast address**: `192.168.1.255`
- **host addresses**:

Any of these addresses can be:

- assigned to a device
