What is microservices architecture?

Microservices architecture is a way of building an application as a set of small, independent services, each of which performs one clear business function and interacts with the others through lightweight protocols (usually HTTP or messages).

The main idea

Instead of one large monolith, the system is split into many autonomous modules: a separate authorization service, catalog, payments, notifications, and so on. Each microservice can be developed, updated, and scaled independently.

Characteristic features

  • Each service has its own database and logic.
  • Communication happens through APIs or message queues.
  • Teams can write services in different languages.
  • A failure in one service does not bring down the whole system.

Advantages

Flexibility and scalability. Independent deployment and updates. Simple horizontal scaling (load can be distributed).

Disadvantages

Harder debugging and monitoring. Network latency and communication errors appear. Requires a well-thought-out infrastructure (logging, load balancing, DevOps).

Summary: microservices architecture is a way to make the system modular and resilient, where each part is a self-contained mini-service working as part of a larger whole.
