Senior Back-end Engineer

Robots & Pencils is an applied AI engineering firm building AI co-workers. We are looking for a Senior Back-end Engineer to contribute to the development and delivery of complex, integration-heavy platforms for a US resort digital transformation initiative.

• Develop scalable back-end services
• Optimize backend performance, scalability, and reliability, and implement security best practices including authentication and authorization
• Contribute to event-driven architectures and asynchronous system operations
• Collaborate with MuleSoft, Contentful/Uniform, and Mobile App teams to deliver high-quality product features
• Work closely with architects and product owners on system design and implementation
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to a culture of excellence
• Bring an AI-forward mindset to your daily work, using tools like Claude, Cursor, and other modern AI assistants to ship higher-quality work at pace
• Contribute to shared engineering practices that lift the quality of work across the team

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, focused on back-end development (Node.js, Python) and API integration
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS Lambdas, Node.js and GraphQL
• Experience with event driven processing
• Demonstrable usage of AI-forward tools such as Claude Code or Codex in software development lifecycle
• Solid knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases
• Experience working in agile teams and delivering production-ready software
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)
• Upper-Intermediate level of English (written and spoken)
• Experience with Contentful and Uniform (helpful extra)
