About the Position
We are seeking an Applications Engineer to join our team supporting the USGS National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. The role focuses on JavaScript development and AWS cloud workflows to maintain and enhance public-facing geospatial applications. You will collaborate on automation, troubleshooting, and performance optimization for impactful national geospatial initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Support and maintain existing geospatial applications used by USGS and other stakeholders
- Enhance application functionality, improve data presentation, and troubleshoot issues to ensure optimal performance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to automate workflows and support cloud-based data processing using AWS services
- Review and improve existing codebases for efficiency, scalability, and maintainability
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to uphold high-quality standards
- Assist in designing and integrating new features or modules within existing applications
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry best practices to recommend improvements
Requirements
- Ability to receive and maintain a favorable adjudicated Public Trust investigation (US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 3 years)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in software or applications engineering
- Proficiency in JavaScript with an understanding of writing clean, efficient, and maintainable code
- Hands-on experience with AWS SDK and AWS CLI, familiar with services such as Lambda, S3, and EC2
- Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including version control, debugging, testing, algorithms, and data structures
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and develop practical solutions
