About the Position

Intellias is looking for a Lead Java Developer to join a team building a bespoke white-label application for managing Health Savings accounts for a US-based startup. The role involves leading a team of Java developers, working on AI-powered features and core platform work within a microservices and Temporal-based architecture on AWS. The team is responsible for all aspects of building the product, from ideation to creation, using cloud-native and Agile practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Java developers to design, develop, and deliver high-quality software solutions that meet business needs and requirements
  • Lead engineering delivery across the team’s full roadmap — a mix of AI-powered features and core platform work, with AI making up a growing share of the backlog
  • Own the engineering quality of AI-assisted features that touch sensitive data (claims substantiation, an internal AI assistant for admins) — including strict access-control implementation so AI tools never bypass per-user/per-org data boundaries
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, product owners, and project managers to define project scope, goals, and deliverables
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to team members
  • Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and ensure code quality
  • Participate in the development process, including coding, testing, debugging, and deployment
  • Work within an established microservices + Temporal-based workflow architecture (Java 25 / Spring Boot on AWS) — experience with durable workflow orchestration is a strong plus
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in Java development and AI integration patterns, and contribute to the technical roadmap.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in Java
  • API design and documentation skills
  • Ability to describe and document technical decisions
  • Deep practical experience with Spring Boot
  • Deep understanding of microservices architectural principles
  • Knowledge of different communication protocols (REST, gRPC, events, messaging)
  • Hands-on experience with Docker containerization for different environments
  • Understanding of CI/CD practices and types of quality gates
  • Hands-on experience with unit/integration/API testing for microservices
  • Taking full responsibility for the results of own work
  • At least Upper-Intermediate level of English
  • Available for international business travel
  • Experience with durable workflow orchestration tools (Temporal, Camunda, or similar) for long-running business processes
  • Experience working in a regulated domain (fintech, healthcare, or similar) with compliance considerations such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, or SOC 2
  • Practical experience building AI-powered features in production — prompt engineering, LLM API integration (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar), RAG pipelines, or embedding/vector-search based retrieval
  • Familiarity with agentic engineering patterns — tool-calling/function-calling, multi-step agent orchestration, and frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, or similar agent frameworks
  • Understanding of the engineering safeguards specific to AI features — access-control scoping for AI tools, auditability/traceability of agent actions, and guardrails against unintended data exposure
  • Bachelor’s Degree
