Your level

You should not just say "I'm middle" or "I'm senior". You need to show by what criteria you evaluate yourself - through skills, experience, responsibility and results.

Example of an ideal answer

"I would rate myself as a strong middle. I have experience independently developing and maintaining several production projects, I'm confident with the React / Next.js / TypeScript / Node.js stack, and I understand DevOps infrastructure (Docker, CI/CD, Caddy, monitoring). At the same time, I keep developing in architecture and systems thinking - I think that to reach senior level I still need to work on technical leadership and mentoring other developers."

This kind of answer:

  • Sounds mature and self-aware,
  • Shows strengths and directions for growth,
  • Helps the interviewer understand where to use you.

How to adapt it to your case

If you are Junior

"I rate myself as junior, but closer to middle - I already know how to solve tasks independently, understand basic patterns, the structure of frontend and backend, and I'm actively building up my algorithms and architecture skills. The main thing is that I learn fast and aim to write well thought-out code."

The main thing is to show potential and self-awareness.

If you are Middle

"I rate myself as middle. I can take a task and bring it to production: design the architecture, write clean code, cover it with tests, deploy it. I have a good grasp of REST, SOLID, DDD principles, I can navigate other people's code, and I'm not afraid of new technologies."

The main thing is to show independence and depth of understanding.

If you are Senior

"I consider myself a senior developer. I can design system architecture, make technical decisions, do code review and mentor others. I understand not just the code but also the product's business goals. I know when it matters to do things "perfectly" and when "good enough" is fine. I have managed teams and processes, and taken part in designing CI/CD and DevOps infrastructure."

The main thing is to show leadership, systems thinking, and a track record of decisions that affect the product.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. "I guess I'm middle... not really sure." → sounds unsure, raises doubts.
  2. "I'm senior because I have 5 years of experience." → experience is not the same as level; depth and contribution matter.
  3. "I can be whatever, as long as they hire me." → lowers the candidate's value.
  4. "I'm junior, but I learn fast." (if you're actually closer to middle) → you're underselling yourself; the interviewer will lower their expectations accordingly.

The best answer format

"By my own internal criteria, I am , because I can <3-5 key skills>. At the same time, I see that I want to strengthen <1-2 growth directions>."

For example:

"I'm middle, because I confidently handle frontend tasks from markup to SSR optimization and API integrations, and I take part in architecture and code review. Right now I'm building up my algorithms and systems thinking to become a strong senior."
