How does technical SEO differ from on-page and off-page SEO?
Technical SEO, on-page SEO, and off-page SEO are three different layers of a single system, each responsible for its own "circuit" of a site's visibility in search engines:
Technical SEO - the foundation
What it is: Optimizing the "under-the-hood" things so the site is accessible, crawlable, and understandable to search bots.
Examples:
- sitemap.xml, robots.txt
- loading speed
- HTTPS and security
- responsiveness
- correct redirects
- code and URL structure
- Core Web Vitals
Why: If a site is poorly built technically, it may not be seen at all, not by the bot, not by the user.
On-page SEO - what's on the page
What it is: Everything related to the page's content and structure.
Examples:
- keywords
- headings (H1-H6)
- meta tags (title, description)
- ALT attributes
- internal linking
- readable text, microdata markup
Why: The search engine needs to understand what the page is about and how relevant it is to the query.
Off-page SEO - what happens outside the site
What it is: The site's reputation on the internet.
Examples:
- external links (backlinks)
- brand mentions
- crowd marketing
- social media activity
- PR, media coverage, guest articles
Why: Google trusts not only what you say about yourself, but also what others say.
The difference:
| Type of SEO | Where it works | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | In the code | Indexing, accessibility, speed |
| On-page SEO | In the content | Relevance, structure, UX |
| Off-page SEO | Outside the site | Authority, trust, external signals |
All three are like a foundation, walls, and a roof. Without one, the structure doesn't stand.
