How does off-page SEO differ from on-page SEO?

On-page SEO and off-page SEO are two different approaches to improving a site's rankings in search engines.

On-page SEO (internal optimization)

Everything that is on the page itself and under your control:

  • Headings and subheadings (H1-H6);
  • Keywords in the text;
  • Meta tags (title, description);
  • Image ALT text;
  • Human-readable URLs;
  • Internal links;
  • Core Web Vitals and loading speed;
  • Mobile adaptation and code structure.

Goal: make the page clear, relevant, and convenient for both the user and the search engine.

Off-page SEO (external optimization)

Everything that affects the site from outside, and most often is not directly under your control:

  • Backlinks;
  • Brand mentions;
  • PR and media reach;
  • Site reputation;
  • Signals from social media (limited);
  • Behavioral signals (time on site, return visits, link clicks).

Goal: increase the site's authority and trust in the eyes of search engines.

The difference in one sentence: On-page is where you optimize content and structure; off-page is where you work on how others link to and talk about you outside the site.
